The Partnership True Price of Food is going Global

The Partnership True Price of Food was born in 2022 as a True Price Foundation initiative supported by NFP. It enables national governments and other actors in the food sector to embrace and apply true pricing on a large scale. The goal is to provide governments and businesses with the tools they need to make healthy, sustainable, and affordable food available for all.

To fulfil our ambition to become the Global Partnership True Price of Food, the team’s efforts in 2022 and early 2023 focused mostly on engaging with national government experts from around the world, all of whom are working on improving food systems. In 4 regional online information meetings with representatives from East African, West African, Latin American, and Asian governments, we explored opportunities for collaboration. Currently, we are designing true pricing pilots in two countries. These pilots have the goal to identify and value hidden costs of food production, such as soil degradation and CO² emissions and to use these results for policy interventions.

Transparency of the hidden costs in value chains, so-called externalities, will enable governments and value chain actors to develop strategies for reduction, restoration and/or compensation of environmental- and social costs of production. Strategies such as adjustment of policies based on true pricing.

In the first half of 2023 we will engage with European government stakeholders to enthuse them to join the Partnership. To do so, we will organise an EU session about true pricing, and round tables on true pricing later in the year.
